Amigurumi for Beginners

“it’s easy to start a new hobby”

I told myself this at the beginning of the year along with my new motto “Comfort is the Enemy of Progress” I wanted to feel the validation that I’m being productive, I want to create something. I’ve done crochet before back in school days, I made a couple of table mats since they are basic and easy to do. I decided to try amigurumi since it appealed to me and looked interesting to do.

Amigurumi (編みぐるみ, lit. “crocheted or knitted stuffed toy”) is the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small, stuffed yarn creatures. The word is a portmanteau of the Japanese words ami, meaning “crocheted or knitted”, and nuigurumi, meaning “stuffed doll”. Amigurumi vary in size and there are no restrictions about size or look.

My first attempt was this cute jellyfish, I didn’t have any safety eyes so I used embroidery thread. It looked easy to make and I followed this video.

The yarn I used is not as chunky as the video so my jellyfish look too small compared to the one in the video.  I had fun creating it, and my son loved it so much even if it was too tiny.

The next amigurumi that I created is this cute cactus.

I felt more confident creating it and I’m proud of it. Again, because of the lack of safety eyes, I used thread to sew the eyes into a sleeping expression.

I had these two videos as a reference to create the cactus.

I think I’m ready to try more complicated patterns and of course finally order safety eyes to make the faces look better. It was a relaxing experience and a great way to keep myself occupied and busy, except for the part that I have to count while stitching so I thank stitch markers for existing.

Etsy Stores I Recommend

When it comes to gifts, I like to take my time in planning the perfect gift. I focus more in keeping the gift fitted for that person character and personality, that’s why I decided to create a box with personalized gifts for my cousin who’s getting married in few days. I mentioned before that I love and support handmade products, that’s why I love shopping on Etsy. Here are the stores I bought from and I would recommend if you’re considering buying similar items.

I found this store while searching for jewelry with real flowers because I was considering getting my cousin a four leaf clover necklace. I fell in love with the items I found on this store and I had to order, the seller is very helpful. The necklace came looking even better than the pictures displayed on Etsy, the details are mesmerizing and you can tell so much work went into creating this piece. I highly recommend the store.

Yippee & Co.

I’m all for bath and body products, I love trying new soaps or scrubs. I was searching for a similar sugar scrub I got from MerLady box because I really liked those cubes before and I found this store that sold a mermaid themed sugar scrub but in a whipped form. I bought Mermaid Wishes and it looked and smelled delicious according to my cousin, it had glitter so it’ll leave your skin shining after use.

Around The Home Decor

I wanted to get a personalized candle but I got intrigued with this store’s candles since the fragrance list had one named “Butt Naked”, I remember giggling while ordering it because it’ll be funny to see my cousin’s reaction. The candle arrived fast and it actually had a great scent, I already promised the seller to buy more from her because she was sweet and helpful when I ran into an issue with the shipping.

I bought plenty more items from other stores but those three stores were my favorite because the sellers were very helpful and kind whenever I send a private message to them, the items I received were in high quality state and I would highly recommend to anyone to check them out.

Life Update, Bracelets and Possible Career Change

Happy Mother’s Day

In my country we celebrate mother’s day on the 21st of March, I know some countries have different dates for this occasion. I wanted to use this day to announce something I’ve been keeping from everyone for awhile now and I thought now it’s the perfect time for that.

I’m almost in my 4th month at the moment and I can’t wait to pass the first trimester, the past weeks were really tiring and it’s been such a challenging time for me. This pregnancy is definitely more different than my previous one, it’s been more tiring and the nausea was making me hate myself. This is why I couldn’t post as much as before, I was dizzy and feeling nauseated for weeks and I kept throwing up from time to time. I’m very excited for this new chapter of my life, upgrade my name from Mom of One to Two.

During these past weeks, I also decided to return to making bracelets. I used make them and sell them on Instagram when I finished college, I made them for fun and people enjoyed that.

Recently I started making them again and it’s making me happy honestly.

My last update is regarding my job, since I’ve been asked on twitter about this I’ll explain it here. I’ve studied software technologies so my career route was fixed in the IT field, and  I understand it’s an on-going developed field and something new happens all the time but working in my position for almost 3 years it doesn’t add to my knowledge anything new basically. My job is considered a routine drived one, 8 am to 2:30 pm and go home. I love learning new things, experiencing something out of my comfort zone like what I did few months ago when I produced a show on the radio.

I’ve been offered two jobs in two separate departments in the same firm and I have seriously considered changing my career route completely. I’ve submitted my cv for one of the jobs and now waiting for a reply, I always search for ways to develop myself career-wise and achieve more skills. Because of my pregnancy though, I don’t want to push and try for that job more till I give birth and then I’ll be in my full-focus mode. We’ll see how that goes and hopefully it goes for the best, my sanity needs that honestly.

MerLady Box – The Crafty Mermaid

logoI’m back to unboxing my favorite subscription boxes and today as the title of the post says, it’s MerLady box time. I’ve been loving this subscription box lately as I mentioned in last month box and the first box I received. I know it’s late since this is March box but I’m posting it either way, the theme of this box is “The Craft Mermaid”

GirlAndHerCat – Purrrmaid Keychain ($10.00)

I’m OBSESSED with this keychain, I love both cats and mermaids so seeing these two as one made me fan girl a little bit. I instantly used it for my car keys and I’m so in love with it.

Baroness X – MerLady Tint Custom Nail Polish ($8.00)

I’m so in love with this shade, it has a beautiful shimmer. It’s a custom tint made for MerLady box but seeing all the shades they offer on their website makes me want to try them all because they all look so beautiful.

Baroness X – Saltwater Scented Cuticle Balm ($4.00)

Another custom item for MerLady box and it’s cuticle balm with saltwater scent which smells so good and it left my lips quite soft after I tried it. It’s super tiny so I kept it in my bag.

TheInklingGirl – Manatee Print ($10.00)

This print is so adorable, I’ve always loved these sea creatures I’ve considered them to be actual Pokemon and they are mermaids. The colors and details is just perfect and beautiful.

TheInnocentBones – Mermaid Cross Stitch Kit ($12.95)

So this is pretty cool, I’ve done some cross stitching before when I was still in school so this was a nice item to find in this box. The kit has everything you need to start stitching but I’ve seen few girls change the original black string to something more mermaid-ish and they did an amazing job with it.

Mermaid Bathbomb with Soap Tail

Now this item isn’t listed in the card that comes in the box so I had to search for it on etsy and found it. I don’t know about the damaged part as the page mentioned because it looks pretty decent to me but the bathbomb donut crumbled a bit but not badly to be honest. It smells good and it looks too pretty that I’m hesitant to use it.

Overall, I would said the Purrrmaid is definitely my favorite item in the box along with the nail polish. The other items are pretty awesome as well. Hope you enjoyed this post and have a great day.
