Why Do Birds Fly ?

I’ve always been a fan of Tales of Series, I played most of the games in the line. Recently I decided to try Tales of Berseria and then play Tales of Zestiria since both of them are connected and share the same time line.

If you haven’t play this game yet, I highly recommend trying it out before reading this post since it contains spoilers.

When she was a child, Velvet Crowe and her younger brother Laphicet were saved by her brother-in-law Artorius when a Scarlet Night happened and the Daemonblight consumed their village—Velvet’s pregnant older sister Celica is killed by the disease through an event known as the “Opening”. A few years later, Velvet lives with Laphicet and Artorius in another village. The Scarlet Night returns, with the entire village succumbing to the Daemonblight: when Velvet finds Artorius, she sees him sacrifice her brother as part of a ritual, known as the “Advent”. Artorius attempts to use her for the Advent as well, but she fights back and the Daemonblight possesses her arm, mutating it and turning her into a Daemon called a “Therion”, with the ability to absorb Daemons. In a rage, she slaughters the surviving Daemons, then witnesses the summoning of Malakhim into the world, including a reincarnated Celica, now an emotionless Malak called Seres. She is thrown into a prison for Daemons in the prison island Titania, swearing to kill Artorius and avenge her brother’s murder. Over the next three years, Artorius forms the Abbey to bring peace to the Holy Midgand Empire, becoming the Abbey’s “Shepherd” and seen as a savior by the people for establishing the Exorcists.

The whole story was a bit too complex, sometimes it was a bit too much for me to understand but it plays out perfectly as it progresses but what bothered me is something pretty much every Tales of Game has to put in the story which is multiple villains to throw you off by the ending so the plot would make your jaw drop. I’ve noticed this pattern in most of the Tales games so I was expecting that part and that took the surprise factor in my opinion but I wasn’t exactly disappointed from the outcome.

I think what I mostly enjoyed are the random skits that gets triggered from time to time, it gave the characters more of a personality and of course I love the humor in them.

Now let me talk about Velvet because her personality was very intriguing to me. For some reason, she made me want to have a black long hair like her. I mean seriously, who wouldn’t want that long hair that never tangle … at all.

She was very interesting to me because she has that tough look with a cold glare just fixated on killing and getting her revenge but as the story progresses she reveals her softer layers and it caught me off guard at times when she shows that she cares.

Honestly when I first saw her appearance, I thought she was similar to Rutee from Tales of Destiny because of her outfit colors and of course her raven black hair. Obviously I bought the DLC that contains outfits and accessories from Tales games and sure enough Rutee whole appearance was designed for Velvet and I wasn’t disappointed.

I have to also talk about Magilou. She instantly grabbed my attention because she reminded me of one of my best friends who has that super happy and positive face while hiding a dark side. Magilou does the exact same thing where she keeps joking and smiling all the time but the way she reveals that she knows too much, makes the whole group question her at certain times.

I was hoping that more time would be invested in her backstory just like the other characters but it wasn’t as much which made me a bit disappointed. I think she had the least role in the game but she was one the biggest triggers in most of the plot of the story.

Now the question that kept getting thrown out from time to time in the game “Why do you think birds fly?” and I thought it symbolized something but I couldn’t get a clear idea of it. Most of the answers said by the characters were a bit too obvious and broad, it didn’t have that deep meaning as the question intended to have. I admired the answer at the ending which was said by Velvet, it wasn’t that scientific and had the perfect sound in that answer.

Birds fly because they want to fly. They don’t need reason. Even if their wings may snap and doom them to die. They don’t fly for anyone’s benefit. They don’t fly because they are ordered to. Birds fly because they want to fly and for no other reason.

I really enjoyed this game, it felt different from the rest of Tales games probably because having the first solo female protagonist and also somewhat dark and evil with the lust to kill. I’m looking forward to start Tales of Zestiria and see how the ending of Tales of Berseria leads to the next part.

So tell me, why do you think birds fly ?
